Occlusion ("occlusion culling" or "occlusion rendering") is a feature introduced in 1.9.1/1.10 which makes it so rendering calculations are not performed for things that are off-camera and/or not visible to you.

Enable Debug > Rendering > Info Displays > Octree to see various occlusion indicators (see Debug for more info).
