In December 2006 Linden Labs began offering economic metrics on the Second Life website. This data is restricted to SL residents.

In February 2007 Linden Labs increased the number of data points available and began offering this in spreadsheet here.

Square Meters Auctioned[]

This is a significant metric in measuring the health of the SL land economy. Land is auctioned when the land owner fails to make Tier payments and occaisionlly, when new sims are added to the mainland and LL does not feel the need to make First Land available to qualifying residents.

There are a finite number of reason why land would become available for auction

The owner inadvertently selects to abandon land using the About Land box. The owner intentionally selects to abandon land using the About Land box. The billing information for the parcel owner's account is incorrect or does not allow the Tier billing to post The parcel owner cancel's their SL account. The normal course of action for a person who no longer wanted to play SL, but had significant land holdings would be to sell \ transfer them. If they cannot sell them before the next Tier payment is due, then one reason would be that they were asking too much.

Therefore its reasonable to assume that the Square Meters Auctioned metric is another indication of inflated land prices in SL.

The Positive Monthly Linden Dollar Flow (PMLF) is a complete misnomer. From the SL website "PMLF (Positive Monthly Linden Flow) looks at the flow of Linden Dollars into a unique user's account BEFORE Linden Lab Charges are applied to the account."

Residents who support Tier above the numbers here would still be net contributors to Linden Labs.
