The act of rendering a stack of texture layers down to one single texture. Usually this is done client-side for the avatar's clothing, then uploaded to the server. Other residents only have to download the baked texture to see the avatar's clothing, rather than having to download each texture layer individually. Sadly this technique has its downfalls, too. While it saves bandwidth, a slow upload connection can lead to long rez time for clothing, leaving avatar appearance blurred for an extended period of time. See also rebake.
