An asset in Second Life is a file stored on the asset server represented as a key. An asset can be an inventory item, an in-world object, agent, or group. The asset server is the server that stores assets, independent from a sim server, and may sometimes have problems which can result in things taking a while to appear, such as group information or a rezzing object/texture. Sometimes experiencing packet loss is confused with the asset server having problems (which can be checked by watching the packet loss indicator in the menubar).
